This is the sixth in a sub-series within the Images of War series from Pen & Sword. This sub-series tackles SS Divisions, and in this case one which has some quite unique aspects to the story. First formed as a Kampfgruppe it was sent to Finland to fight alongside the Finnish Army against the Russians. In September 1941 it was formed into a full Division.
The book is divided into an Introduction, four chapters and 5 Appendices. It follows the basic format of the series, with each chapter starting with a text section which tells the historical story of the unit's history, along with a series of associated archive photos. The main chapters cover The Eastern Front 1941; The Kestenga Front 1941-43; Withdrawal from Finland; and Last Months. Then the Appendices provide detail on Division-Nord Winter Uniforms, Order of Battle 1941-42, Nordwind Order of Battle 1945, Nord Titles & Commanders, and rounds off with a list of Rank Equivalents.
The division was one which fought most of its' war inside the Arctic Circle, so lots of photos showing it in winter conditions and hence with winter equipment. Lots of detail on uniforms and equipment, not much on vehicles or armour. Late in 1944 and early 1945 they were withdrawn and fought against US forces in the Vosges and managed to put up some stiff resistance before being pushed back and the survivors surrendering to US troops in May 1945. For military historians this is an interesting one, and for modellers lots of uniform detail and diorama ideas.
